Description:

Ribbed pine borer is a common beetle in the relative few areas of Denmark, where pine dominates the landscape. They hibernate as imago under the bark of dead or dying conifers ready to “hatch” as soon as spring is present. Studies have shown that this beetle a perhaps other related species have thermal hysteresis antifreeze agents in different parts of their body to prevent spontaneous ice nucleation at low sub-zero temperatures. Taking pictures of these Beetles that are only active in sunlight present some problems with too much contrast often occuring; this one I think is ok.
